World Rhino Day

World Rhino day is celebrated every year on the 22nd September.

There are five rhino species – black, white, greater one-horned, Sumatran and Javan.

Some people think that the Rhinos horn have special medicine powers, and because they think that, poachers hunt the rhinos and take their horn away to sell for lots of money. (a poacher is a person that hunts and hurts animals).

The horns are made of keratin, that is the same as our fingernails, so will not help in medicine.

There are less than 6,000 (six thousand) critically endangered black rhinos remaining. (critically endangered means they are at high risk of extinction and that means ‘no more rhinos’)

This is super cute, check it out, it is David Attenborough video with baby Rhino

Some people still want to hurt them and it is up to us to stop them. Do you agree with me that the Rhino horn should only belong on the rhino, and poachers should not hurt them? WOW! you do agree with me! A big high-five from me too you as that makes you kindhearted and caring, which is amazing!

You can become one of 50,000 (fifty thousand) wildlife advocates and be a voice to save these wonderful animals, (advocate means helping the rights of others, in this case, you are the voice for the rhinos and you are saying to the poachers “LEAVE THE RHINOS ALONE AND DON’T HURT THEM ANYMORE”)

So, on this special rhino day, maybe you could get together with your friends and family and read books about rhinos or draw pictures of them and colour them in crazy colours! You can also add your name to the African Wildlife Foundation pledge here and together we can stop this cruelty!

Whatever you decide to do today, I hope you have lots of fun.
