Polar Bear Week

Between the 3rd and 9th of November 2019 is Polar bear week. During that week we should all think about the importance of sea ice to polar bears and how we can help with climate change to make sure they survive. ( climate change means the earth climate is changing, it is also called global warming).

Have you noticed, the weather lately? it’s getting warmer, snow and ice are melting sooner in the spring, rainfall patterns are changing, sea levels rising. Many of these will cause problems for people, animals and ecosystems (ecosystem means all the living things in an area and the way they affect each other and the environment).

In the country of Canada, there is a town called Churchill in northern Manitoba, it is off the west shore of Hudson Bay.

Polar bears have started to gather near there to wait for sea ice to return. They need sea ice to survive, they depend on cold Artic, deep snow and frozen tundra (frozen tundra means frozen ground). They will hunt for food on this ice and travel to find a mate and teach their baby cubs how to live.
