Reindeers & Santa Claus.
Rangifer tarandus means; Arctic deer with large antlers in both sexes; called ‘reindeer’ in Eurasia (Europe and Asia combined) and ‘caribou’ in North America.

There are two groups, Arctic Tundra reindeer and woodland reindeer. Arctic tundra is a huge space that has no trees and is the area around the North Pole. It is extremely cold and there is very little light in winter and very little darkness in summer, they live above the northern treeline, and sometimes can be found on arctic islands. The woodland reindeers can be found in the forests of Finland and Siberia.

Many years ago, in fact, it was 1823 a poem appeared in Troy Sentinel which was a daily newspaper in New York and it mentioned a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer, the poem is known as ‘Twas the night before Christmas’ it was written by Clement C Moore. Have you heard it?
Part of the poem says;
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny rein-deer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled and shouted, and called them by name: Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen! On Comet! On Cupid! On Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! dash away! dash away! dash away all!
I bet you recognise it now, after reading that! It is said that because of this poem we now associate these named reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh!

One of Santa’s oldest reindeer is Dasher and he is known for stamina and his amazing speed.
Dancer is a girl. She is quick-moving and she will help Santa if he gets stuck in the mud or snow, Dancer will get the other reindeer working together to get out of the mess.
Prancer is Dancers sister. she moves with high springy steps she is an expert runner. She flies really well.
Vixen is a girl. she loves all things girly, She loves to wear bows, even when she flies.
Comet is a boy and he is really fast. He has strong legs and muscles. Santa takes him on trips all by himself because he is so strong.
Cupid is a girl. When she flies she loves to sing, she is really sweet and kind.
Donner is a boy. He is a lot older than the other reindeer and he is the leader among all the others.
Blitzen is a boy. He is very quiet and never wants to stop working or take a rest.
It has come to light that male reindeers lose their antlers in winter! So, that means that all Santa’s reindeer are pulled by females! What do you think?

I think that is all of Santa’s reindeer, isn’t it? Can you think of another one? Oh my gosh, I nearly forgot Rudolph! Silly me!
Rudolph’s was written in verse by Robert L May in 1939, it was published as a book to give to children who visited the Montgomery Ward department store. Rudolph did not like his red nose at first, and he felt sad when the other reindeers were nasty to him. On Christmas eve while Santa was delivering presents, he noticed a bright red glow and asked Rudolph to help him as it was a foggy night and he needed him to light the way, Rudolph was so excited to help and he returned home a hero. Do you recognise the verse below? I bet you have sung it many times! 1, 2, 3, all together now…..

You know Dasher and Dancer
and Prancer and Vixen;
Comet and Cupid
and Donner and Blitzen –
but do you recall
the most famous reindeer of all?
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose,
and if you ever saw him
you would even say it glows.
All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolph
join in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy christmas eve,
santa came to say,
“Rudolph, with your nose so bright-
won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”
Then how the reindeer loved him,
and they shouted out with glee,
“Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer-
you’ll go down in history!”

I hope you all have a very merry Christmas and warm wishes for the new year.
