War Animals

On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the first world war ended.

On this day every year, we remember those very brave men and women and animals that sadly died during that war and the wars that have happened since.

We celebrate this by wearing a poppy. Have you ever seen people in the streets selling them? Have you worn one? Have you noticed that on this special day and time everyone stops and stands still and are silent? Well, that is the time we remember all those brave people and animals. It is very important that we do this, always wear your poppy with pride.

Millions of animals were used during the war;

  • Horses
  • Mules
  • Dogs
  • Camels
  • Bullocks
  • Carrier Pigeons
(picture from google)

Horses moved well through mud and rough ground, so they carried messages, pulled wagons. They had ambulance horses, they carried soldiers that were hurt. They had horses that carried weapons (guns) and ammunition (bullets). They had to be very strong.

(picture from google)

The conditions for the horses were very bad. Many died because of starvation (very very hungry) and exhaustion (very very tired and weak), they also got hit with the bullets from the guns. Over 1 Million horses and mules were used by the British Army during World War 1.

A lot of dogs were used, they worked hard and soldiers trusted them. They had sentry dogs (sentry means – Stand guard in one place, keeps a lookout for danger) these dogs would stay with the soldier and they would growl or bark if they sensed a stranger was nearby.

(picture from google)

They had casualty dogs. These dogs were trained to find soldiers that had been hurt very badly. They also carried medical supplies in a backpack to the hurt soldier and then the soldier could treat themselves. They would also stay next to a soldier that was dying, so the soldier was not alone. What a wonderful act of love these dogs showed the soldiers.

100,000 (one hundred thousand) carrier pigeons were used to pass messages during the war. Pigeons are very good at finding their way home, so the soldiers would write a message and strap it to a very lightweight case on the pigeon’s leg and then let the pigeon go, it would fly home. When they landed, wires in their nest would sound a bell or buzzer and then someone would go and get the message off the pigeon’s leg. WOW! that is fantastic, isn’t it?

Soldiers lived in trenches (long narrow ditch‘s) during the war. They came across lots of pests, including rats, the rats fed off rotting food, (there were no rubbish bags or bins). They had little dogs to catch the rats.

Please go and find more information about these truly wonderful and heroic animals, and what an amazing job they did to help in the war. I have only mentioned a few and there are a lot more that helped, you will be amazed.

Polar Bear Week

Between the 3rd and 9th of November 2019 is Polar bear week. During that week we should all think about the importance of sea ice to polar bears and how we can help with climate change to make sure they survive. ( climate change means the earth climate is changing, it is also called global warming).

(picture from google)

Have you noticed, the weather lately? it’s getting warmer, snow and ice are melting sooner in the spring, rainfall patterns are changing, sea levels rising. Many of these will cause problems for people, animals and ecosystems (ecosystem means all the living things in an area and the way they affect each other and the environment).

In the country of Canada, there is a town called Churchill in northern Manitoba, it is off the west shore of Hudson Bay.

(picture from google)

Polar bears have started to gather near there to wait for sea ice to return. They need sea ice to survive, they depend on cold Artic, deep snow and frozen tundra (frozen tundra means frozen ground). They will hunt for food on this ice and travel to find a mate and teach their baby cubs how to live.

Go and see them via a live webcam here the camera is on tundra buggy, so it appears bumpy, but it looks super terrific.

Halloween & Black Cats

Black cats have been related to Halloween for many, many years, most people think it is because their fur is the colour of night – which is, after all, when witchery and nastiness took place.

Some cat shelters, even to this day will not let people adopt black cats before Halloween because some people may hurt them.

Some owners of black cats will keep them inside the house just in case someone steals their beloved pet.

(picture from google)

I think black cats are awesome, do you?

Here in the UK the black cat is thought of as lucky, which is good because a cat of any colour is simply, just a cat. They want to be loved by you and they will love you in return.

The best thing is to make sure your cat is safe this Halloween, so be mindful of candles in the pumpkins, as your cat could get seriously injured by the naked flame, might be safer to use plastic tea lights. Your treats could also harm your cat, chocolate is poison to animals and they will be very poorly, so the best thing to do is put them in a cupboard for safekeeping, unless you eat them all in one go! But you wouldn’t do that, would you? Remember – make sure you brush your teeth before bed!

Hope you have lots of fun this Halloween. Stay safe.

Trick or Treat, Smell my Feet, Give me something Nice to eat, Please…

Hibernation.

Hibernation means staying inactive through the winter for a long period of time.

Have you hibernated before? I bet you have! Can you think of a time when it had been raining and it was cold outside, and instead of going out to play with your friends, you decided to snuggle down under a nice warm blanket or fluffy throw, and you had lots of your favourite goodies next to you! well, that is kind of like hibernating.

(picture from google)

The following animals in the UK hibernate;

  • Hedgehogs
  • Bats
  • Dormice
  • Reptiles (slow worms, grass snakes, adders)
  • Some insects (ladybirds, some butterflies, bumblebees)
  • Amphibians (newts, toads, frogs)

Animals go into hibernation (snuggle down) around September or October and come out again 6 to 7 months later, normally around April. So they sleep all winter when it is cold and say hello again in spring when it starts getting warm. That seems like a very clever idea, doesn’t it?

(picture from google)

Hibernating animals have to prepare themselves for the winter, so they eat lots and lots of food to make themselves really fat, and that fat will give them energy while they sleep (hibernate).

The animals slow their bodies right down, they are able to slow their heart rate and breathing down and also lower their body temperature. A hedgehog can slow its heartbeat down from 190 beats per minute to just 20 beats per minute and its body temperature will drop from 35’c to just 10’c!

If you ever come across an animal that is hibernating then you must not disturb it, because if you wake it up it will use a lot of energy, it will then have to look for food to survive, and in winter there is not a lot of food around.

(picture from google)

Birds do not hibernate, but they also do not like the cold winter months, so what they do is fly thousands of miles to a warm country, this is called Migration. When the weather warms up again the birds will fly back, and it is usually to the exact same place they flew from before, so, every year these birds will leave and come back. I think it would be like going away on a nice holiday! what do you think?

World Animal Day, 4th October

Today is world animal day and everyone should spend this day thinking of animals.

The mission is to make the welfare of animals around the world better.

(picture from world animal day)

The lives of animals are affected by the actions of people, if you are kind to animals and look after them, then that animal will be so happy, but if you are nasty and cruel to the animal, then that animal will be very sad and upset!

If you were an animal, how would you like to be treated? Yes! That right, with kindness and affection.

(picture from world animal day)

All animals, whether big or teeny weeny are sentient beings (sentient means being able to feel emotions) you and I are sentient beings!

  • Do you feel sad?
  • Do you feel happy?
  • Do you feel hungry?
  • Do you feel love?

Yes! we feel all these emotions, well, animals do to!

I think we should make this world a better place for all animals, Do you? Are you with me? Yes, that’s awesome, with everyone around the world being super kind, the animals will super happy.

(picture from world animal day)

So, today maybe you could make a pledge to be;

  • Kinder to your pet.
  • Find charities local to you and see if you can help.
  • Pick up litter so animals do not harm themselves.

For lots more information click here or click the links below the photos.

There is so much you can do, but always remember, BE KIND TO ANIMALS.
